Visiting Japan's Fine Dining Restaurants with Children and Babies
Visitors are sometimes surprised to learn that a large number of Japan's fine dining establishments are open to babies, children and students in the dining room. While stipulations vary by restaurant -- some only allow children in the private rooms or at lunch service, some allow strollers while others don't have the space, and so on -- many parents and families are relieved to find that they have options when traveling with children. Even those restaurants without dedicated child-friendly facilities can sometimes handle reservations with kids by request.
This time, we'll introduce seven Osaka sushi counters, including those with MICHELIN accolades, that invite children to dine with their families across a variety of scenes and age ranges. Be sure to mention any key details, such as the number of children, their age, and any allegeries or restrictions when you make your reservation. Rest assured that these seven options are prepared to accept families with the utmost hospitality. Family-friendly restaurants are in high demand, so take advantage of Eatinerary's instant booking service right away for any seats that catch your eye.
7 Family-Friendly Sushi Restaurants in Osaka
1. Sushi Hoshiyama (鮨 ほしやま)
Chef Hoshiyama of Sushi Hoshiyama has held one MICHELIN star in the Kyoto-Osaka guide since 2014, yet the style of sushi he prides himself on is completely orthodox Tokyo Edo-mae sushi. His technique and serving pattern follow the "King's route" starting with white fish and ending with boiled anago. Though his training has all been in the Kansai area, the sushi masters he learned from were well versed in Tokyo-style sushi, which is reflected in his classical style. Some of the most well received toppings include wild-caught kuruma ebi, boiled to enhance their sweetness, and the kombu-cured seabream. The rice is kept at a high tempurature for his maguro, enhancing the sweet sensation of melting fat that perfectly compliments his red-vinegared rice.
While there are no special acommodations made for young children, students who are able to sit comfortably at the 8-seat counter with their adults and enjoy the same omakase menu are welcome.

2. Sushidokoro Kurosugi Shinkan (寿し処 黒杉 心貫)
This, the three-time MICHELIN selected Kitashinchi branch of Sushidokoro Kurosugi invites diners to try two singature courses or order by the piece to suit their preferences. Reservations including children ages 7 and up who can also enjoy the course meal (12 pieces of nigiri for the sushi-only omakase) are accepted. Kurosugi's simple style, just fresh, seasonal ingredients and sushi rice made with only low-acidity red vinegar and a little salt, is especially appealing to visitors who might be experiencing fine sushi for the first time. A slightly longer course including appetizers and small plates is also available for those who prefer a lengthier experience.
The no-frills sushi with excellent hospitality and approachable pricing makes Sushidoko Kurosugi an especially appealing choice for families looking for Osaka sushi.Grown-ups will appreciate the local sake variety and uniqe flavors like miso marinated sweet shrimp, while kids will love the a la carte karaage chicken nuggets.

3. Sushi Murakami Jiro (鮨 村上二郎)
Students aged 12 and up can enjoy the course meals at Sushi Murakami Jiro, where a colorful pair works the room serving excellent sushi and hospitality. Locals greatly appreciate being able to enjoy the proprietress's warm hosting skills and her husband, the sushi master's skillful handiwork as he shapes each piece of nigiri. The couple works diligently to create a mature, but welcoming atmosphere. It's only natural that "Murakami's Stage" has earned one MICHELIN star every year from 2020 to 2025 and been named among the top 100 sushi spots in Osaka.
Do note that due to the popularity of the earlier 6 p.m. seating, only the 8:40 pm seating is available for instant reservations, and all guests will be required to order at least one beverage. Needless to say, for tweens and teens ready to dip their toes into the world of sushi fine dining, there are few counters as heartwarming as this.

4. Sushi Yuden (鮨 悠伝)
MICHELIN selection, formerly one-starred Yuden is consistently praised for its welcoming atmosphere. Chef Nishimura is blasé about his, calling Yuden "just an average sushi place," but his effort in hand-selecting fish from Osaka's port and relying on trusted partners to bring in the best seafood from Tokyo's Toyosu says otherwise. The counter is made of cut from a 160-year old cedar, and each piece of sushi is served vertically, facing the rice towards the guest so it can be picked up more easily. While chef Nishimura pursues his own individual style of sushi, he leans on nostalgic elements to offer no only the best sushi, but the best hospitality.
Children who can enjoy the same course as their accompanying adults are welcome.

5. Sushiya Yohei (鮨屋 与兵衛)
Sushiya Yohei is very serious, but in the best way. Its head chef, Kenji Imanishi, worked his way through high-end hotel restaurants before diving into sushi technique at the renowned Saeki in Kyoto. A disciple of the Saeki school, he infuses his own restaurant with their technique, while pursuing his own maniac-level of detail with each piece. The menu denotes the temperature of the rice and topping for each piece, and he switches the wasabi he uses depending on the seafood to make the most of different nuances. His menu is predominantly nigiri, with just a few intermittant bites of otsumami to refresh the palatte texturally. Diners note the quality of his kombu curing and powerful red vinegar sushi rice.
While the restaurant does not ordinarily accept children, accommodations can be made in the case of a rent-out kashiri reservation.

6. Sushi Kirimon (鮨桐紋)
How would you feel about having your children indulge in an omakase course that has been listed in the Guiness Book of World Records as the world's most expensive sushi? Not to fear, Chef Setta's normal course menu is equally remarkable and a fraction of the record-holder's eyewatering $2500 pricetag. After traveling the country and working at MICHELIN restaurants in the city's most well respected food capitals, he settled in the historical entertainment district of Kita Shinchi with the goal of becoming the world's best sushi chef. In pursuit of this dream, the restaurant makes use of both red and white vinegared sushi rice infused with dashi, as well as a wide variety of soy sauces and wasabi selected to suit each topping.
Although only children who can enjoy the same course as adults are allowed to accompany adults into the restaurant, Chef Naoyuki Setta's commitment to conveying Japan's tradition through sushi is guaranteed to be unforgettable.

7. Sushi Haku (鮨 白)
Sushi Haku offers special accommodations for families who will be bringing children that aren't old enough or able to enjoy the adult course menu, as long as advance notice is provided. For a discounted fee, they are welcome to sit at the counter with their guardians, or babies can be accomodated depending on the party's needs. If students are joining that will enjoy the same menu as the adults in the party, they can simply be added to the number of guests in the reservation. Sushi Haku was a 2023 MICHELIN Guide selection and continues to thrill diners with premium courses of nigiri sushi served on elegant dishware. Attention to detail here is, as with most sushi restaurants at this level, paramount.
On the second floor, adult guests are invited to share a drink at Sushi Haku's private bar. With its wide selection of sake, aged whiskey, and global wine list, it's the perfect place to relax.
