Kagurazaka and Iidabashi Area

Kagurazaka Highlights

Kagurazaka Highlights

Kagurazaka is a picturesque neighborhood that winds along a series of slopes, with the word "zaka" (slope) itself becoming synonymous with the area. This vibrant district has thrived for over 200 years and, much like Kyoto’s Gion, once flourished as a geisha district. Even today, the narrow streets on the right side of the hill retain the nostalgic charm of that bygone era. In recent years, the area’s old-world allure has gained increasing popularity, leading to an influx of new restaurants, many of which are upscale. The neighborhood is particularly known for its abundance of French and Japanese eateries, with several Michelin-starred restaurants among them. Despite its small size, Kagurazaka is home to two Michelin three-star restaurants. The area is especially favored by affluent locals and celebrities, who are drawn to its refined atmosphere.

Iidabashi Highlights

Iidabashi Highlights

Iidabashi lies just below Kagurazaka and has its origins about 300 years ago when Tokyo, then called Edo, became the capital of Japan, centered around Edo Castle. Many samurai warriors who served at the castle lived in this area. Originally known as Iidamachi, it was renamed Iidabashi after a bridge was built over the moat of Edo Castle. Today, Iidabashi offers a unique blend of historic Edo-era charm and the modern landscape of Tokyo. The area is home to several universities and major corporate offices, making it a vibrant hub for students and office workers. As a result, Iidabashi features many casual dining spots, perfect for a laid-back lunch or quick meal.

Ichiu is a Michelin-listed sushi restaurant, led by head chef Koichi Hamano. He trained at the two-Michelin-starred Japanese restaurants Akasaka Kikunoi and Ginza Kojyu before honing his sushi skills at Kumamoto Senpachi, another two-Michelin-starred establishment. The restaurant offers a single omakase (chef’s choice) course, but thanks to his background in Japanese cuisine, Chef Hamano incorporates key elements such as "Owan" (dashi-based soup) into the appetizers served before the sushi. This adds an extra layer of enjoyment to the meal. The sushi itself features rice made with a blend of several types of vinegar, resulting in a refreshing yet sharp flavor that pairs beautifully with the fish, elevating the overall dining experience.

This was our first Omakase experience, and as such it is hard to compare- as such, I will give it from the perspective of a new person with no expectations or standards.

The location and outdoor facade immediately gave the impression of something high class and exclusive. The interior was plain, to give emphasis on the food and plateware. (Honestly, my favorite part was the beautiful plates, pots, and dainty cutlery).

The chef spoke some English, not enough to properly explain some dishes- so we are without knowing exactly what, but that's what we came here to do so we did it without question. Also, we did not expect English at all- we we appreciated it.

If you are looking at this because it is half "traditional Japanese" and half sushi (which is what I did, as my Husband is not fond of sushi)- the traditional Japanese portion was more exotic and elevated than the sushi. Meaning, you would have better luck with a picky eater at a full sushi omakase. It is food I have never experienced, or even thought of, and as an adventurous eater it was quite an experience.

The sushi was the star, in my opinion. It was beautiful, fresh, and delicious. The dessert was my second favorite, but I won't spoil what it is- but it is something everyone will like.

The biggest "upset" I had was that for a fine dining experience, I was expecting a level of solemnity and reverence, so there was no distraction from the food. Instead at our table, we had one older Japanese couple who was talking loudly the whole time- and the chef gave no attention to the other couples at the counter at all. I felt a little overlooked, and almost as a nuisance.

But, for our first Omakase, I am pleased and happy to share my experience with family and friends.
