About Ichiu

Reservations available at 17:30 and 20:30 from April 1.

"Ichiu" is a sushi restaurant helmed by Head Chef Koichi Hamano. He boasts an illustrious career, having honed his skills at renowned Japanese cuisine and sushi restaurants that have earned Michelin stars.

The restaurant offers a course that combines two genres: kaiseki cuisine, which includes aperitifs, soups, fried dishes, takikomi rice and boiled noodles, and desserts, and sushi, which is about 8 pieces of sushi.

”Ichiu" is located in the quiet alleys of Kagurazaka, amidst a row of prestigious establishments. “ Ichiu” lives up to its name, meaning “a single building” in Japanese. Inside, you’ll find a cozy and elegant space, decorated with beams reminiscent of a traditional Japanese house’s roof. Here, you can savor the artistry of the skilled chef and enjoy exceptional culinary creations.

This dinner was unforgettable, thanks to the cozy, welcoming atmosphere created by Chef Hamano and the rest of the staff at Ichiu. The generous sake tasting pairings perfectly complemented the meal and made the experience even more special.

This was our first Omakase experience, and as such it is hard to compare- as such, I will give it from the perspective of a new person with no expectations or standards.

The location and outdoor facade immediately gave the impression of something high class and exclusive. The interior was plain, to give emphasis on the food and plateware. (Honestly, my favorite part was the beautiful plates, pots, and dainty cutlery).

The chef spoke some English, not enough to properly explain some dishes- so we are without knowing exactly what, but that's what we came here to do so we did it without question. Also, we did not expect English at all- we we appreciated it.

If you are looking at this because it is half "traditional Japanese" and half sushi (which is what I did, as my Husband is not fond of sushi)- the traditional Japanese portion was more exotic and elevated than the sushi. Meaning, you would have better luck with a picky eater at a full sushi omakase. It is food I have never experienced, or even thought of, and as an adventurous eater it was quite an experience.

The sushi was the star, in my opinion. It was beautiful, fresh, and delicious. The dessert was my second favorite, but I won't spoil what it is- but it is something everyone will like.

The biggest "upset" I had was that for a fine dining experience, I was expecting a level of solemnity and reverence, so there was no distraction from the food. Instead at our table, we had one older Japanese couple who was talking loudly the whole time- and the chef gave no attention to the other couples at the counter at all. I felt a little overlooked, and almost as a nuisance.

But, for our first Omakase, I am pleased and happy to share my experience with family and friends.

Our experience here was simply the best we’ve had in Tokyo, our driver called and asked if someone could come and escort us from our drop off location and they came to us and escorted us in. Upon arrival we were very warmly greeted. The beer & sake selection were excellent. The chef’s attention to detail with every course was exemplary and we greatly enjoyed every thing we were served. A truly delightful experience.

It was an awesome experience with many firsts (raw shark heart was beyond our wildest expectation). Each dish was prepared and served carefully and beautifully, showcasing the skills and knowledge of the chef. We also love their homemade sake for welcome drink, highly suggested to include it in the drink menu.

Last night’s dinner is on the top two dining experiences during this 15 day trip through Asia. Excellent blend of kaisaki and sushi omakase. New flavors I haven’t experienced before and the great service made this a very memorable evening.
