Tokyo's Culinary Prestige: Michelin Stars and 10 Reservation-Friendly Spots
Michelin official partners introduce MICHELIN restaurants in tokyo.
1.Why Tokyo Has So Many Michelin-Starred Restaurants

How many restaurants in Tokyo have been awarded Michelin stars?
Japan has the highest number of Michelin-starred restaurants worldwide. Since the launch of the Michelin Guide Tokyo, the city of Tokyo has consistently received the most stars out of any place in the world for 17 consecutive years. In the 2024 edition, a total of 183 establishments received stars: 12 venues with three stars, 33 venues with two stars, and 138 venues with one star. Additionally, when including the restaurants listed in the Bib Gourmand, a total of 504 establishments have been recognized.
Tokyo, a renowned gastronomic destination, boasts a high concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants for good reason. Japan is blessed with four beautifully distinct seasons, is surrounded by the sea, and is predominantly composed of mountains, offering an abundance of fresh ingredients that underpin the country's culinary culture. Attracted by the wealth of ingredients from across the nation, many skilled chefs come to Tokyo to refine their culinary expertise.
How to reserve Michelin-starred restaurants
Despite Tokyo's large number of Michelin-starred restaurants, many of these fine dining venues are small, privately operated establishments, particularly those serving Japanese cuisine and sushi. These restaurants often have just eight to ten seats, primarily at counter tables, and it is not rare for some of the popular restaurants to be fully booked for years in advance. Additionally, many of these small establishments lack online reservation systems.
This article aims to guide you through restaurants in Tokyo, divided into three categories:
1. Ten must-visit restaurants with easy reservations that promise to be a highlight of your trip to Japan
2. Six renowned restaurants where reservations are extremely challenging to secure
3. Five budget-friendly restaurants listed in the Michelin Guide
The restaurants listed in this article have been selected by the editorial team from OMAKASE, the only official partner of the Michelin Guide that provides online culinary services. OMAKASE has established strong relationships with renowned high-end restaurants in Japan through direct communication.
For a list of restaurants in other parts of Japan, please refer to this article.
2.Ten Restaurants You Should Make Reservations with Right Away
Here, we present ten easily accessible Tokyo restaurants that are sure to become highlights of your trip.
Udatsu Sushi/Sushi

Sushi meets art in an art gallery-like ambience at Udatsu Sushi, where you can enjoy a traditional, authentic Edomae (Tokyo-style) sushi experience. All the sushi ingredients are of exceptional quality: rice is specially grown for Udatsu Sushi by a trusted farmer, rice vinegar is crafted by blending three types of vinegar, and toppings are sourced daily from the market. Chef Udatsu prioritizes visiting the actual production sites, and his visit to a farm in Hiroshima inspired the innovative herb roll, which features completely pesticide-free herbs and white fish.
At the heart of the artistic setting is a counter table crafted from 150-year-old cypress wood. What better place to indulge in the finest sushi than in the sophisticated and artistic atmosphere of Udatsu Sushi?

Ali Hsieh5.0Posted on :04/06/2025We came here for a gathering, and the food was absolutely fantastic—definitely deserving of one Michelin star or more! One of the best parts was how light and veggie-forward the dishes were, which was perfect after a long day of traveling around Tokyo (and snacking along the way).
The owner was incredibly friendly toward us as Taiwanese visitors and could even speak a bit of Taiwanese, which made us feel right at home. The staff, dressed in traditional Japanese kimonos, were very welcoming and provided warm, attentive service.
We were seated in a room with a beautiful view of a traditional Japanese garden, which made the meal even more special. Moreover, a raccoon even paid a surprise visit to the garden during our dinner!
It was truly a wonderful experience. We’ll definitely come back again!
Ishibashi/ Unagi (freshwater eel)

Experience unparalleled dedication to perfection at Ishibashi, a one-Michelin-star eel restaurant. Ishibashi offers exceptional eel dishes made with eels sourced from designated farms and raised according to the chef’s exacting standards. Savor the finest unagi, expertly cooked for an hour and paired with a sauce boasting a history of over 100 years.
Japanese eel dishes, unlike the smoked eel dishes found in China and Europe, are prepared using the kabayaki method in which the eel is steamed between rounds of grilling and seasoning. While waiting for this meticulous cooking process, enjoy the available side dishes and sake. An English menu is provided for your convenience.

Ten-Masa/Tempura

Tradition and innovation are blended at Ten-Masa to create a new culinary genre: “tempura kaiseki.” Enjoy a course meal that artfully combines Japanese cuisine and tempura, with the latter taking center stage. The omakase course begins with fundamental yet playful dishes, followed by tempura crafted to enhance the natural flavors of the ingredients. A standout is their signature dish, sea urchin tempura.
Owner-chef Masahiko Ashiki spent 20 years refining his skills in tempura and Japanese cuisine restaurants before opening Ten-Masa, which has consistently maintained its one Michelin star for 13 consecutive years. Okamoto/ Japanese cuisine

For an exceptional Japanese dining experience, visit Okamoto, run by a chef who previously served as the head chef at both two-Michelin-star restaurant Wakuden in Kyoto and three-Michelin-star restaurant Yukimura in Tokyo. The chef's omakase course, prepared in front of diners in the open kitchen, showcases the finest seasonal ingredients during your visit and is nothing short of a culinary masterpiece.
In addition to the seasonal dishes, culinary enthusiasts rave about Okamoto's specialty: soba with mullet roe. Other signature dishes, such as sabazushi (mackerel sushi), also leave a lasting impression.

LiJintong5.0Posted on :06/17/2024An exceptionally wonderful dining experience, with unparalleled menu combinations, and heartwarming communication. The restaurant is located on the first basement floor, yet it is incredibly cozy and comfortable. The chef is professional, meticulous, and has a great attitude. Each dish is an organic combination of different types of ingredients, with flavors that are both surprising and astonishing, so delicious they could bring tears to one's eyes, and the portions are very generous!! Highly recommended.

Raynor5.0Posted on :04/27/2024Superb meal! I particularly enjoyed the buckwheat soba and beef broth with tonburi ("mountain caviar"). We sat in a private room and the chef(s) were exceptionally attentive. They do speak English, we did not have any issues. Highly recommend, especially for foreigners who would like to try an innovative local meal.
Please note, we had a little trouble finding the restaurant because the building signage is not in English. When you find the address, Okamoto is in the basement. Additionally, for those who are familiar with Western high end dining, the omakase meal is more courses, so please make sure you have full room in your stomach before visiting.
Jushu/ Japanese cuisine

If you're seeking a taste of Kansai (western Japan) style cuisine in Tokyo, Jushu is the place to go. The chef, a native of Saga, crafts artistic dishes using premium beef, vegetables, and seafood freshly sourced from Saga Prefecture. Jushu's signature dishes include charcoal-grilled rump cap from Saga beef and horsehair crab with sea urchin dressing. Watch the chef's culinary expertise in action as you savor these delightful dishes. Freshly sliced, exquisite sashimi served on beautifully crafted plates is also a feast for the eyes.
The cozy, intimate setting allows for a close connection with the chef, enhancing your dining experience. The European-style interior, with its high ceilings, ensures you enjoy the ambiance without feeling confined.

John Mak4.7Posted on :04/05/2025A nice and fine Japanese restaurant in a quite upscale neighbourhood. The owner is kind and diligent in giving us briefing on every course he presents. The staff also keep their service to the end as my wife and I would have left over our iphones and found ourselves stranded if they had not picked up the gadgets and run out to catch us. Thank you very much.
-
Richard vella4.7Posted on :10/19/2024The food was amazing! All the ingredients and courses tasted out of this world! Too many courses to count, a lot of fish, as well as duck and beef.
We communicated with the chef through Google translate, which worked a treat and we got to share some laughs, whilst also learning many new things!
The only thing that let it down a little, was how quiet it was. There was a couple who bumped into and said they went every quarter as the season change, a testament to how delicious the food was. But after they left, it was only my wife and I! A little quiet, but an incredible night to remember! -

Jeannie T4.8Posted on :04/25/2025Chef Yamaguchi and his staff prepared a most excellent edomae-style sushi dinner this week. There was much care placed into every delicious morsel. The otoro in egg sauce just melted in my mouth; even now I can savor it in my memory, it was that good. All the fish served was very fresh, just like what I would expect from such an establishment.
On a side note, I was initially apprehensive about dining alone as a single woman; I had heard some Japanese restaurants can be indifferent or even downright rude to foreigners. To my great relief, every staff member was extremely friendly and spoke English, and I felt very well taken care of.
I would definitely return in a future visit! -

Joan4.3Posted on :12/14/2024This was our first Omakase experience, and as such it is hard to compare- as such, I will give it from the perspective of a new person with no expectations or standards.
The location and outdoor facade immediately gave the impression of something high class and exclusive. The interior was plain, to give emphasis on the food and plateware. (Honestly, my favorite part was the beautiful plates, pots, and dainty cutlery).
The chef spoke some English, not enough to properly explain some dishes- so we are without knowing exactly what, but that's what we came here to do so we did it without question. Also, we did not expect English at all- we we appreciated it.
If you are looking at this because it is half "traditional Japanese" and half sushi (which is what I did, as my Husband is not fond of sushi)- the traditional Japanese portion was more exotic and elevated than the sushi. Meaning, you would have better luck with a picky eater at a full sushi omakase. It is food I have never experienced, or even thought of, and as an adventurous eater it was quite an experience.
The sushi was the star, in my opinion. It was beautiful, fresh, and delicious. The dessert was my second favorite, but I won't spoil what it is- but it is something everyone will like.
The biggest "upset" I had was that for a fine dining experience, I was expecting a level of solemnity and reverence, so there was no distraction from the food. Instead at our table, we had one older Japanese couple who was talking loudly the whole time- and the chef gave no attention to the other couples at the counter at all. I felt a little overlooked, and almost as a nuisance.
But, for our first Omakase, I am pleased and happy to share my experience with family and friends.
