Oryori Mashita – A Seasonal Retreat in the Heart of Gion
Along the bustling Shijo Street in Kyoto’s Gion district stands Oryori Mashita, a serene Japanese restaurant tucked behind a gently swaying noren curtain, offering a quiet reprieve from the rhythm of daily life.
Step along the stone-paved path, gently sprinkled with water, and you’ll find yourself entering a different world—one steeped in the elegance and tranquility of Japanese tradition. Here, you are invited to savor the essence of each season through delicately composed dishes that reflect time-honored techniques and heartfelt hospitality.
At Mashita, deep respect for ingredients and sincerity in preparation guide every aspect of the experience. It all begins with our ichiban-dashi—a refined broth made daily from freshly shaved katsuobushi (bonito flakes) and hand-selected kombu (kelp). With thoughtful attention to temperature, presentation, and vessels, our chefs seek to highlight the natural flavors of each seasonal ingredient.
Spring brings the seasonal Hassun plate in celebration of Setsubun—a traditional Japanese event marking the transition from winter to spring. In summer, enjoy Kyoto’s iconic hamo (pike conger) paired with vibrant vegetables. Autumn features earthy mushrooms and seasonal mackerel, while winter highlights ebiimo (a type of taro) and shogoin kabura (Kyoto turnip)—regional delicacies. The delicate and rich flavors in these dishes evoke the quiet depth of each season.
The interior centers around a striking counter of pale wood, creating a warm and graceful setting suited for any occasion—from solo visits to cherished gatherings, formal dinners to celebratory moments.
Each plate is prepared with care and reverence, showcasing the ever-changing rhythm of nature. We hope your time at Mashita becomes a cherished moment—embraced by the quiet elegance of Gion and the flavors of the season.
We sincerely look forward to welcoming you.
