About Otagi
Nestled in the quiet elegance of Takagamine, Kyoto, Otagi is a refined Kyoto-style restaurant that harmonizes with the serenity of its surroundings.
The name derives from “Otagi,” an ancient name for the area, chosen by Chef Kazuaki Baba out of deep affection for his hometown. Inspired by his grandmother’s connection to the land, he selected this location with heartfelt intention.
Chef Baba, formerly head chef at the esteemed Wakuden, brings a wealth of skill and sensitivity to each dish. Drawing on the traditions he mastered at this prestigious establishment, he infuses every plate with the value of making the journey to Takagamine.
His cuisine showcases the bounty of the region and the finest seasonal ingredients—morning-harvested vegetables from nearby farms, Kyoto’s prized Kameoka beef, and delicacies like stonefish (okoze). While rooted in tradition, his monthly tasting menus shine with bold and imaginative touches, such as using a sweet soy glaze inspired by traditional eel sauce as a base for unexpected creations.
Yet this innovation never strays from the spirit of Wa (Japanese harmony). Even the final dish, Hayashi rice, is crafted with traditional Japanese ingredients such as bonito dashi, Hacho miso, and zarame (granulated sugar), offering a gentle nod to heritage in every bite.
Set within a standalone building embraced by the majestic Takagamine mountains, the restaurant opens into a serene space overlooking a stone garden. In this museum-like atmosphere, guests are invited to experience the changing seasons through cuisine that reflects the soul of Kyoto.
