About THE IMPERIAL VIKING SAL
THE IMPERIAL VIKING SAL is the buffet restaurant at the Imperial Hotel, which was the first to introduce the "all-you-can-eat" buffet style to Japan. Opened in 1958 and renovated in 2023, this restaurant primarily offers French cuisine, but also includes Japanese and Chinese dishes, providing a diverse menu.
In 1957, then-President Tetsuzo Inumaru was inspired by the Danish smorgasbord, leading to the opening of Japan's first buffet restaurant the following year. Despite having the same price as accommodation, it became a huge success without any advertising. The name "Viking" was derived from a pirate movie of the same name at that time, where there was a scene showing pirates feasting heartily. This aligned perfectly with the restaurant's concept of allowing guests to choose and enjoy as much food as they desired.
Since then, the menu has expanded to include smoked, pickled, and salted dishes, as well as hot dishes and desserts. Guests can enjoy about 40 authentic dishes while interacting with the chefs. In 2023, Japanese and Chinese cuisine were added to the French offerings, continuing to provide an more enjoyable dining experience.
