About la bûche

la bûche is a restaurant located in Ohara, Kyoto. The name “la bûche” means “firewood” in French.

Ohara is my beloved hometown, where I was born and raised.

We offer wood-fired cuisine, featuring locally nurtured ingredients.

Our dishes are crafted with daily-changing vegetables, cage-free chicken, wild venison, and boar, aiming to create unique plates for each moment.

Additionally, we enhance our dishes with a selection of my favorite natural wines, primarily from France, each with its own unique character.

We hope you enjoy everything this land has to offer, from the journey to reach us, the air you breathe upon arrival, to the scenery that meets your eyes.

    Superb culinary experience
We has a wonderful and enjoyable meal. Impressed by the ingredients picked (some were freshly hand-picked on the day) by the chef. All dishes were delicately prepared and delicious. We definitely will be back when traveling to Japan.

I would like to start this review by saying that this was the best dining experience I have ever had. Initially Ms. Mori was extremely accommodating with my dietary requirements and by communicating via email prior to our reservation.

The location requires a taxi or hour long bus out from Kyoto, however it is absolutely worth it as the produce used in the menu is local to Ohara, which is a lovely place by itself.

The restaurant is stunning and extremely intimate - we found upon arriving that we were the only diners that night and had a phenomenal experience with just us and Mr. and Ms. Mori.

We were sat opposite the open fire at the counter and were able to watch all of the food preparation and cooking, whilst asking questions about everything.

We also opted for the drinks pairing which had been prepared by Ms. Mori that day to match our menu - this included homemade cocktails.

I don't want to spoil the experience for anyone else, but our food was exquisite. The menu changes daily and uses produce local to Ohara. This reflects Mr. Mori's ethos about training in France and coming back to Ohara to give back to the community and start his own restaurant.

We were also celebrating our engagement and a dessert was gifted to us.

To summaries, the hospitality of the couple was phenomenal and I would urge anyone travelling to Kyoto to experience la bûche.

    Wonderful experience!
Most ingredients are from wild (especially hunting) cooking through wood fire with French techniques.

    Service is great too!

Absolutely incredible French omakase style service - phenomenal husband and wife team that are as charming as they are talented.
