Michelin Restaurants in Kyoto for Solo Diners
Wagokoro Izumi (和ごころ泉) / Japanese / Karasuma

Chef Izumi is sometimes said to be the greatest apprentice of the late Sakurada Restaurant. This 2 Star Japanese restaurant is named Wagokoro because of the master's commitment to providing a menu and atmosphere that calms the soul. It's an ideal environment to sink into fine cuisine, especially when eating alone. Courses are served on meaningfully chosen servingware but without exterraneous embellishment or pretense. This leaves room for both guests and ingredients to breathe. Signature menu items include salt-roasted ayu sweetfish that appear to swim on the plate and Chef Izumi's specially prepared dashi.

Shimmonzen Yonemura (新門前 米村) / Innovative / Higashiyama

This reimagining of Restaurant Yonemura, with its charming logo and unexpected whimsy (a glass cat objet, for example) has been awarded 2 Michelin Stars. Its design -- and menu -- are playful fusions that embody creativity while paying respect to tradition. An eclectic selection of Western and Japanese servingware cradle beautiful dishes independent of genre. The Franco-Japanese cuisine is warm and colorful, but the careful service reminds diners that Chef Yonemura takes his omakase menu seriously indeed.

Akai (閼伽井) / Japanese / Higashiyama
Akai's final kanji, the one for 'well', represents just how key the simple element of water is in washoku. Akai, headed by Chef Hiroki Abe, was awarded One Michelin Star in 2023 and recognized as a Selected restaurant in the 2024 Michelin Guide. The humble interior feels like an anachronism with its 20th century seating and the surprising chandelier hanging above. However, small touches like this make Akai special. As he looks towards modernization, Chef Abe's dishes increasingly incorporate Western ingredients, the icing on top of a thought provoking array of 24-season inspired ingredients and servingware made by living national treasures.

Sushi Hayashi (鮓 はやし) / Sushi / Shimogamo

There is a form of sushi that can only be served in modern day Kyoto. This sushi, facilitated by high-speed travel and international connections, is what diners find at Sushi Hayashi. The meal is served in Japanese, French, or English by 25-year veteran Yoshio Hayashi. His experience abroad has led to a singular menu of Swiss wines. While meeting the expectations of contemporary diners with fresh, shipped in fish for Edomae nigiri, Chef Hayashi also honors Kyoto's landlocked traditions through steamed and preserved sushi. Its One Michelin star is a well-deserved accolade.

Jeff Hongo5.0Posted on :04/22/2025Sushi Hayashi is a cozy place with only 8 counter seats. Simple but very attentive service. Enjoyed the small portion appetizer dishes before the nigiri. Sushi themselves were fresh. Very much enjoyed it and recommend anyone in Kyoto to try out Sushi Hayashi.
Gion Sushi Tadayasu (祇園 鮨 忠保) / Sushi / Higashiyama
Gunma native, Morita Tadayasu was inspired to pursue sushi in middle school thanks to his parents' fish merchant business. After 20 years working in Tokyo, Chef Tadayasu relocated to Kyoto, where his shop quickly became a prominent name in Kyoto's Edomae sushi scene. The restaurant achieved the impressive feat of earning One Michelin Star from 2019 through 2021 and continues to charm guests in its all-cedar, renovated townhouse. One of the signature dishes pits the sweetness of shrimp against salty caviar in a burst of ocean delight.

Noguchi Tsunagu (のぐち継) / Japanese / Gion

Start with a short selection of the Chef's recommended dishes -- just five or so -- and continue the meal with movements of your choosing. Tsunagu, meaning connect, bridges the gap between a la carte and omakase dining. There are elements of foriegn cuisine in Chef Daisuke Yoshida's menu, but the essentials remain. In this sparsely decorated space, a lush dialogue between chef and diner develops naturally, filling in the white space with delicious aromas and flavors. The beef soup and fresh rice are not to be missed.

Sushi Rakumi (鮨 楽味) / Sushi / Higashiyama

Kazuya Nomura, with a Sushi Sasaki Alma mater and over 6 years studying Edomae sushi in Tokyo, is a star pupil who spans the sushi tradition of both East and West Japan. Steamed abalone served risotto-style, pureed salmon egg TKG and more creative dishes fill out a menu of both red and rice vinegared rice sushi, including its well-known maguro nigiri. Each seat at the custom counter offers a great view of the preparation, making the solo dining experience even more thrilling. The restaurant has been awarded a Michelin Star since 2020.

Gion Fukushi (ぎをん 福志) / Japanese / Higashiyama

An elegant kappo-kaiseki mix that displays a unique sensitivity to trends while sticking closely to Kyoto's traditional seasonal cuisine. Chef-owner Fukushi Takuyoshi honors holidays like Hina matsuri and Tanabata with his diners through elegant Kyoto-ware and celebratory menus. His experience at Tsubaki has left a lasting mark on his approach to cuisine, which is both modern and traditional, incorporating the latest fashions without compromising quality. Tozentei (陶然亭) / Japanese / Kinkaku-ji

This restaurant is straight out of fiction. The restaurant is named after an eatery in famous literature, which took its own name from the word tozen, which describes a pleasant level of tipsyness. The restaurant has earned a Michelin star and serves guests with a balanced array of food and drink. Its signature dish is a steamed tilefish with plums and kombu seaweed. Tozentei is just a three man operation, run by a couple and their son, who in turn treat each honored guest like family. The initimacy and friendly atmosphere is a welcome break for diners enjoying a Michelin meal alone.

Kodaiji Jugyuan (高台寺 十牛庵) / Japanese / Kiyomizu-dera

Kodaiji Jugyuan is named after the Jugyuzu, a series of paintings of 10 oxen. The building itself is a 100 year old sukiya structure that overlooks a Japanese gardenand offers stunning views of Kyoto from the second floor. This restaurant has been managed by the Hiramatsu group, which is well known for its French cuisine, and thus Jugyuan also incorporates Western meat service and preparation. There are several private rooms from which diners can enjoy the seasons and holidays celebrated in Two Starred Jugyuan's menu.

Vena (ヴェーナ) / Italian / Karasuma-Oike

The chef and sommelier duo at Vena considered themselves bound by fate and to the City of Water, leading to the birth of a One star restaurant serving aged Italian wine and local products. Chef Hayakawa and Sommelier Ikemoto spent 14 years developing their skills and friendship before opening Vena in 2016. The name refers to the theme of water that is present in both owner's names and in Kyoto's nickname. Antique furniture in dark wood plays against the white-washed walls for a contemporary feeling that mirrors the duo's approach to Italian cuisine. Counter seats on the first floor are perfect for solo diners.

AS5.0Posted on :02/14/2025This was the best meal I've ever had in Japan. The tempura batter was so light and cooked to perfection. They served a few other dishes that weren't tempura and that was a great starter. The fruit at the end was sweet and delicious and refreshing. I was so full but so happy. The most wonderful meal and experience. The interior is simple and beautiful and modern. The chef, host and staff are also incredibly kind and so dedicated. I will return again for sure!

Nakatsuka (ナカツカ) / Innovative / Karasuma-Oike
Nakatsuka opened in 2017 under NARISAWA alma mater Takayuki Nakatsuka. The chef emphasizes aroma in his cuisine, from his application of heat to unlock fragrance to his use of herbs and citrus. Chef Nakatsuka's goal is to tantalize the palate even before the first bite. His open kitchen allows these scents to mingle freely while diners relax and enjoy. Wines hail mainly from Burgundy, but the French cuisine menu is influenced by Spanish sensibilities and Japanese ingredients. Color, sauces, and vibrant hallmarks of European cuisine make his bold omakase selection a worthwhile Michelin Star.
